"You should experience being foreign at least once."
The idea of moving to the other side of the world and starting a new life sounds pretty intimidating to most people. And it should! Leaving your friends, family, and school behind isn't an easy thing to do- but that's the entire reason people decide to study abroad in the first place. Becoming an exchange student is probably the best way to step outside your comfort zone and see the world from a completely new perspective.
Below is a list of what I believe are the best reasons to study abroad...
Reason #1) To become a more self-aware, mindful person
Living in a new place makes you realize how big the world is, and how small you really are. Traveling and going on vacation is great, but living in another country long term allows you to recognize how small you are, and how closed-off you are when you're living in a bubble. It's difficult to appreciate and recognize what's unique about your town until you move to a completely different place.
Reason #2) To learn a new language
Studying abroad is the quickest (and in my opinion, the best) way to learn a language. Being forced to use a language in everyday conversation is the most effective way to improve your skills. It will also significantly improve your skills in language class when you move back home!
Reason #3) To become independent
Being in a new place by yourself can be difficult at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to different situations. This means that you will learn how to be independent and mature, and you will become more confident and grow as a person. Adaptability is one of the most valuable traits a person can have when it comes to getting a job and working in groups.
Reason #4) To make friends
Although it may be difficult at first, making international friends is one of the most rewarding and fun experiences of studying abroad. In this day and age with social media it's easy to stay in contact even after you leave!
